France  –  Circa 1730

DIMENSIONS:
40 in.H x 63 in.W x 23 in.D

Rare “Buffet de Chasse” (Hunting Buffet) in finely carved walnut, elegantly” double ‘bend” on each front doors and both sides. Remarkable quality with deep wood moldings and spectacular hand sculptures of foliage, flowers and shells front and sides. The bottom rail is wonderfully “chantourne” with a masterful central shell décor. Also exceptionally elaborated forged steel escutcheon work on each door with beautiful large hinges. The buffet has its original -and not repaired – scrolled front feet. Superb and original “Rouge du Languedoc” marble top -1.25″ thick- having its edge cutted and polished in “bec de corbin” (bill headed?) front and sides. Coming from “King’s quarry” in Languedoc, as it was a favorite of the Sun King supplying the refurbishment of the “Petit Trianon” of the Versailles Palace. This marble is typically crossed by interconnected pods filled with gray or white calcite crystals that can show distinct layers.
What is certain, is that this Buffet was made by a Parisian Master (stamping was not required before 1751) early 18th century as some carving (e.g. sunflower) is Regence Period and for a Noble or very fortunate family. It was also called “Buffet de presentation” as they were using it to present or cut the hunting game on it in the dining room.
