Remarkably fine carving for this Christ as one can see teeth carved beyond his parted lips, gorgeously done long curled hairs and a very wide perizonium attached to the hips by a small cord.
Probably made in Dieppe (a port in Normandy), French center for Ivory carving since the 16th Century. The work is signed J.U.Y. (the 3 initials of the carver) under the left forearm of Christ
The Frame is ” a cle”-as it was early 18th Century, in carved and gilded wood and is also “a pare-closes” i.e. with little mirrors all around .
