French Empire Chandelier with six lights

France – Circa 1810

DIMENSIONS:
48 in.H
122 cm H
DIAMETER
18 in. (46 cm)

Elegant and original in its design to fit the shape of an antique lamp. Made of very finely chased and ormoulu gilded bronzes and patinated dark lacquered zinc based metal. Shows six light arms made of heavy gilded bronze representing each a satyr mask at one end and a torch housing candle before and now electric candelabra. Three (original) chains linked to the lamp by swan necked ormoulu bronze and at the other end by a canopy decorated with six gilded bronze rosaces at top and a stylized pine cone finial under. Another canopy is linking the chandelier to the ceiling.
Fabulous ormoulu bronze decor under the lamp -essential as this is a very visible part of a Chandelier-representing owls alternated with torches and a finial being a gorgeous massive pine cone.
Due to the delicacy and the lightness of its decor, this chandelier is providing a view of the exceptional skills of the “bronzier” (lost wax casting, chiseling , patinating) and the “doreur” (mercury gilding) in Paris early 19th Century: a piece of Art!
