Sebire was born in Normandy (next to Caen, Calvados) and studied in Rouen from 1936-1944 working night jobs to devote himself to painting the day. Moving to Paris in 1951 he gained quick recognition but in 1957 he moved back to his Normandy.
French Galleries such as Visconti, Charpentier, Drouant noticed him and from 1965 he exhibited at Wally Finlay Galleries NY, Paris and Chicago. He was honored by various awards: Casa velasquez, Critics price winner in 1953, Greenshields award in 1957, Gold Medal of Salon des Artistes Francais (1968) and the Medal of Honor at the Salon de la Marine. He was appointed Official “Peintre de la Marine”in 1973. In 1991 a retrospective of his work in the “Musee de la Marine” in Paris showed his talent as a figurative painter.
With an exceptional talent he painted fo 60 years, focused only on beauty, light and colors.
“Plage au Havre” is signed lower left “G.Sebire”. This oil on canvas do not show the anchor which traditionally follows the signature of a Peintre de la Marine because it was made before 1973.
