Southern French Water Jug by “Vieux Biot”

This rare and very decorative water jug was made in the village of Biot which has been a pottery center -still operating today- since 18th Century, and its name given by the locals is “chevrette”. Its an handmade glazed pottery with a bulged body surmounted by two molded and wide handles with a short straight spout just under one of them. Superb dark yellow ocher color glaze mixed with brownish iron oxyde and very rare overall shape.
Marked “vieux Biot” under and also signed by the potter, unfortunately illegible.
Today these jugs are used mostly for display or as a vase and always provide warmth and charm in an house .
