French 18th C. carved giltwood Bust
France 18th Century
Giltwood bust of women wearing a turban and a solid plume. A wave of Orientalism broke in France in the 18th C. with no particular style but inspired by the totally imagined exoticism of Ottoman, Persian and Far-Eastern Empires. It was happening in Literature (Montesquieu, Voltaire), in Arts (paintings notably) and in Fashion particularly hairstyles and coiffes, (always higher...). This French woman great wood carving shows her plaited hair attached to the turban in the back and a pearled hairpin in front.
