18th Century French Silver and Gilt Bronze Christ on a Wooden Cross
France Ca 1750
Beautiful quality Christ with its excellent original silver gilding. His eyes are open, and his head is not wreathed with thorns. It has the waist girded with a perizonium cloth resting on his hips? The hands are finely chased with detached -and intact- fingers. He is attached to the cross by four nails, two in center of the hands and two on the top of feet. The cross is in mahogany as well as the two levels rectangular socle. At the top of the cross, an "amour" is holding a small panel carrying the INRI inscription. Skull and crossbones at the Lord's feet, both also in silver plated bronze. Gorgeous and rare piece. The cross can be detached easily from the base if needed.
Christ only: H 7.5 in. x W 7 in.
