Terracotta Sculpture "Old Shepherd" by J. Le Guluche
France Ca 1890
Marvelous terracotta sculpture by Joseph Le Guluche (1849-1915), the most famous Artist of L'Isle Adam (the city next to Paris) by the quality and the importance of his creations. Here he represents a "Vieux Berger" with his dog. Written in front of the base "Le Soir il attend le Signal" (in the evening he -the dog- waits for the Signal.) It's a poly-chrome cold painted modeled (not molded) terracotta wonderfully showing the calm but severe features on the man's face and the interrogative eye & attitude of the dog. The Artist masters totally the realistic rendering: the unshaven face, the closed mouth, the hat, the coat, the bag and the hand's position on the cane. Signed "Le Guluche" on base and "A. Hanne 401" for Alphonse Hanne (1858-1908), the editor.
