Serveware, Ceramics, Silver and Glass

France Ca 1880

This stoneware Jar was handmade in Ger, a village in the heart of Normandy, famous for its stoneware clay craftsman from 18th century till 1920. Stoneware is not porous and therefore can be used for liquor storage such as "Calvados", a local liquor universally known made from the crab apples that grow in Normandy.
This jar (five or six gallons) was used for storing and eventually aging Calvados.
With its very pure design lines, could be used today for display or as a vase, providing a touch of warmth.

Excellent condition. There are three small pieces of green glass stuck to the surface. The jar must have been held next to a hand blown glass operation at some point of time. Wear consistent with age and use.
