France 1865

Emmanuel Fremiet (Paris, 1824-1910) was an important 19th century sculptor known especially for animals and famous personages as Joan of Arc equestrian gilt bronze sculpture everyone can admire in the center of the Place des Pyramides (across the Louvre) in Paris. Napoleon III was a great admirer of Fremiet's work and ordered more than 50 pieces from him. The sculpture here is a bronze with a golden brown patina representing two French Basset hounds (male and female) chain up to each other. Admire the sculptor's talent in providing a quizzical look on Ravageole face as she peers at a passing snail and Ravageot bent his left foreleg. Signed on base "E.Fremiet".
