Regular price $6,030.00 $0.00

France 1850

A terracotta group representing a Satyr detaining a resisting Bacchanal. It rests on a cylindrical base surmounted by a rock on which there are a tambourine, a thyrsus, and a wine Amphora. Signed Carrier-Belleuse. The sculpture is on a gilded wood sole. Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) was nicknamed the "Clodion of the 19th century", (in reference to the 18th century Master Sculptor). He would have described the "Bacchanal" as "genre de Clodion". However, as June Hargrove, USA Professor of 19th-century European Sculptures and Painting explains, Carrier-Belleuse Sculpture "generates an earthly eroticism more brutal than Clodion gossamer atmosphere".
